BetterHelp: Global Stigma Report
Primary Survey Research
Financial instability also meant fewer support systems:
53% less likely to feel they can rely on friends during mental health struggles
49% less likely to have healthy relationships with parents
36% less likely to feel comfortable discussing negative feelings with friends
These statistics paint a stark picture of the emotional and mental toll financial hardship can take. While globally most people turn to friends, family, or everyday tools for support, those without financial stability often have no one to turn to at all. This project underscored the urgent need for accessible mental health care and support systems for everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
The Ask
BetterHelp tasked us with conducting a survey to uncover the stigmas associated with seeking mental health care across the world.
The Approach:
My colleague and I worked closely with Dynata and the BetterHelp team to execute this project over a 6-month period, from developing the questionnaire to analyzing and cutting the data, and finally articulating the insights into a compelling story for the CEO.
This project was fascinating because it told a clear story of the cultural, regional, and socio-economic influences that prevent people from seeking mental health care around the globe. With the help of my colleague, we created a questionnaire versatile enough to be translated and understood in 21 different regions. Through Displayr, we dissected the data by various factors (age, gender, race, household members, etc.) to uncover valuable insights.
The most poignant takeaway was the heartbreaking reality faced by those who can't afford basic needs:
2.5x more likely to have suicidal thoughts daily
5x more likely to say they're "not at all happy"
75% more likely to experience daily fatigue
